I am trying to use a GPIO to turn on a 1mA led. I think that driving a 1mA LED would be fine. Anything upto 5mA should be fine. Most LEDs are around 10-15 mA. Of course it all depends on the resistor that you use. A typical LED drops about 1.4v.
