My ultimate objective with my gumstix project is sort of a dumb one -- I want to simply run a browser on the Samsung LCD touchscreen and be able to interact with a webserver that I run at home. This is part of a home automation project -- I need a tiny, touchscreen controllable system that can talk on my wireless network at home. I got pretty excited when the verdex/netwifi-microSD/consoleLCD-vx all came together -- it seemed like the perfect combo. I wondering now if I've made a mistake. At best, I'm an enlightened amateur when it comes to kernel building for Linux, and while I'm able to successfully follow in the footsteps of others of you with way more knowledge, I'm finally starting to appreciate that I may have bitten off more than can chew with the gumstix. To get to my final result, I still need to -- get WPA wireless networking running (I hate the idea of exposing my home wifi network with WEP) -- get a windowing system capable of running a browser installed and running on the gumstix -- get the touchscreen working (the LCD already works) -- get a browser running on the gumstix At this stage, I haven't a clue how to proceed with any of these tasks. >From mailing list traffic it seems that WPA wifi isn't working for anybody yet, and I haven't seen any posts about a windowing system for the verdex MB. Are there any small enough to fit? Anyway: I'd appreciate advice from the group -- is the gumstix not really a good platform for a non-kernel hacker type? -M. |
