You have to fail-to-load the pcmcia stuff if you want to use MMC, otherwise there's a conflict between the two controllers trying to use the same lines. The instructions in the motd (the message you get when you first login) should explain how to edit /etc/modules and /etc/network/interfaces to disable pcmcia stuff and enable MMC instead.
