What happens if you use wget -O - ftp://ip-address/bigfile > /dev/ null instead of trying to save the file? Otherwise you've got a lot more memory shuffling etc going on while the kernel tries to write everything to the tmpfs -- not that I expect it to be more than maybe 2x faster, but 500kB/s seems slower than the transfers I get when typically wgetting stuff.
