Hello Rajagopalan.

To "boot linux on the gumstix" you do not need to connect through the 
serial port. Once you power up the board, it will boot normally.

If you want to access a console login you will need access to the serial 
port. You can either do this via the hirose connector, or simply by 
purchasing one of the HWUART expansion boards. This also provides a USB 
connection, as well as a power supply jack
