Ray- In a way the sockets and such are the abstraction. You can access the port like it's a serial port and feed it bytes, but by using tcp/ip multiple programs can communicate through the same port and not have any crosstalk, plus you get to use formatted I/O, which relieves you of having to start/end bytes, byte stuffing and all sorts of other nasty stuff.
