There is a subtle difference between executing a script and sourcing a script. Executing a script essentially causes a sub-shell to run. The subshell happily modifies its environment and then exits, throwing all of the changes away. You have a couple of options: 1 - Put the commands into a file and then use the source command (which is a single period) . ./Somefile Sourced files are executed in the context of the currently running shell, as opposed to launching a sub-shell. 2 - Create a .profile file in the /root directory and put the commands in there.
