It's the latter, with the alternate method that Jorg pointed out. One tool that's worked reasonably well for me is Album Cover Art Downloader[1]. It's written in python using the QT toolkit. With the libgpod python bindings, I imagine you could whip something up to call the same methods that albumart uses to grab images. I've thought about doing that but so far haven't gotten around to trying it. Another possibility for cover art would be extending gtkpod's use of libid3tag to find embedded cover art (in the APIC tag) and using that. I've not looked at all to see if libid3tag supports APIC or not. It'd definitely be cool if someone with an afternoon and some decent coding skills decided this was something they wanted to have.
