It seems so to me too :-) A good thing is that the problem is not gramps-specific. This means that something is missing on the lower level. Here: http://qref.sourceforge.net/Debian/reference/ch-tune.en.html#s-env-local= e are the steps that debian uses to activate a locale. It seems that LANG works _only_ if the LC_ALL is not set, and if LANGUAGE is not set. Check your environment ('printenv | grep LANG').
