Next to Ubuntu recommended by Benny, you can also use Mint, which uses the packages distributed by Ubuntu, but has desktops that I like way more than Ubuntu's Unity, or KDE, or Xubuntu. Mint is number 1 on distrowatch, and runs Gramps 4 just as well. While most Mint versions are Ubuntu based, and follow the Ubuntu releases closely, there is another Mint version that may be even more interesting for you, because it is directly based on Debian Testing, and thus looks like the most debianish you can get. It is also semi-rolling, meaning that you don't have to do big upgrades like you have to to with Ubuntu and standard Mint.
