It sounds as though you've got into a bit of a muddle. (1) The locked "copy" probably means you're trying to open the family tree when you've already got it open. If you've made a .gramps or .gpkg copy of the tree and want to open it to check, you need to create a new Family Tree with a name *different* from the original e.g "Copy of my original Family Tree", then Import your .gramps or gpkg into the Copy. (2) "Media file already exists" comes up when you've tried to set up your tree once already from a .gpkg and you're trying again. Gramps usually puts your <name of tree>.gpkg.media folder into /home/dan (or whatever your home user folder is called). Using Edit=>Preferences you tell gramps to look for media files elsewhere, e.g /home/dan/Family Tree/Images or whatever; but /home/dan/<name of tree>.gpkg/media is still there. It doesn't interfere with your working on the tree, but you have to get rid of it if you want to import <name of tree>.gpkg another time. (3) Clicking on xxx.gpkg is equivalent to saying "Create a new Family Tree with the name xxx and Import xxx.gpkg into it". So it's likely to run into problems (1) or (2).
