Rob, You're right: it's a lot simpler than chasing down the invocation of osmgpsmap. I was a bit dubious, seeing osmgpsmap.la says dependencies and installation ought to be in /usr/local directories. But having deleted the symbolic links and copied the files to /usr/lib64.... Geography works fine.
