Hi, > 4) Include other open source genealogy apps and tools Maybe we have one candidat[1] for end users! "Ftree is an X-windows program to store and display family tree genealogy information. It has been designed to run under Linux (Intel platform only at present) and has been built with the Xforms GUI tools." The last stable and devel[2] versions run fine under Ubuntu 10.10 (Live Genealogy CD). It is a binary files but I guess we should be also able to compile ourself a working version ? There is maybe an encoding limitation (non-ASCII & ANSI) and is "english only", but it is able to import most primary data from gramps/example/gedcom/sample.ged. There is some reports and fonctionalities[3]. So it could be a Gedcom manager for end users under Linux, like "Lifelines" model! About the License, I cannot find it, but there is a COPYRIGHT statement and some comments[4][5][6]: "Is the source code available for FTree No, not at present. The point of FTree is to help people on Linux that want to do Genealogy, so at the moment I haven't released the source since most of the people that use it are not programmers and in general are interested in using it to do genealogy and not interested in fiddling with it. There are also other factors; firstly that my day job involves software management, thats what I do to pay the bills. For me FTree is a bit of light relief, cos I actually like writing code and don't always want the aggravation of managing other people having all the fun.. Siting on a 12 hour flight from London to Shanghai, I'd rather work on FTree than read the newspaper or do a crossword. Secondly I don't have the bandwidth spare to manage the project and that would really quickly start to frustrate people with good ideas. I may well release it in the future if I decide that I'm not going to do any more development. I'm not convinced there are many actual users of FTree that really would make much use of the source and the people that seem to be interested, seem to want it for reasons that may be important to them, but are not particularly interesting or important to me. I'd also note that the source is not very well structured or documented and would be hard for others to work with which also makes me a little reticent to release it publically. I started work on FTree around 1992, before I knew about either Linux or GEDCOM, it has evolved a long way since then. Summary: I write and support FTree for entirely selfish reasons and then release it to the wider community because there are a few people out there who find it useful.. Simple really ;-)" "At the moment it is not "free" in the FSF sense - you can't get the source code or change it."
