For Notes, I think that the Note Type could provide the required functionality, but at present it doesn't look like it does. I assume that the idea is to hide research notes in some reports. It would be useful if by setting the Note Type to "Research" the note was excluded from reports. Perhaps reports that display notes could have an option "Display research notes?".
