Also maiden name/married name of a > wife, nicknames, ... > I usually record surnames as I find them in things like census [ WALCH, WELCH, WALSH in about forty years of census records for the same family ]. In the notes section I will list where and when I found each different spelling. Like when I found my GGGGranfather in the 1850 Census he was listed as WALCH so that's how I put him in the database. The next census didn't have him but his wife and children with the spelling WALSH. In 1880 My GGGrandfather was listed as WELCH when I found him so that's how he's listed. In 1900 my GGrandfather was WALSH again so that's how he is listed. [ remember we are working backwards so sometime the children won't show in the database with the same spelling as the father. ] I don't list married women by their married name. I only use their birth name. Married women generally take on the surname of their husband so it's sort of understood that after "marriage" they will go by that name. When I first started I listed married women by the husbands surname in all caps if I didn't know their maiden name, but stopped that practice and deleted the all caps listing. Nicknames, if I know one, I put in the given name field in quotes. Family links will generally keep straight how it all connects. Right, wrong, or just plain indifferent, that's how I deal with it. It works for me. A good program should be flexible enough to allow each person to use it how they want. > Then, if you search on a name in GRAMPS, it will return the person, > even if it is only present in the alternative name list.
