I'm running a default install of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as I presume you are, 8.10 will behave similarly. You won't have Partition Editor installed. You may well want to avoid Terminal and the command line. In current versions of Ubuntu almost everything can be done graphically. You should find your Windows c:\ mounted automatically as /windows rather than /media/windows. Usually /mnt is empty and never used any more. Try this: click Places -> Computer -> Filesystem then [Enter] You should see a folder labeled "windows". Double click it to open your Windows drive just like any other folder. So the path to your pictures might be /windows/Documents and Settings/(some user name)/My Pictures. You won't have to type this just use the application's browse feature to navigate there. No? Double click the media folder. Is there a windows folder there? No? You'll have to resort to manual mounting or editing some system files. Those will all be subjects of threads on the Ubuntu forums. Where you keep your pix will depend on how you use the computer. If you are primarily a Windows user then leave them as is. After you become comfortable with Ubuntu then you will want to move them. The only downside to moving them is that the file dates will be reset if you don't use the command line with the right options. We all have tried different file schemes through the years - don't hesitate to experiment. BUY A BACK-UP DEVICE AND USE IT OFTEN! Your family history is too valuable to lose whether you're running Windows or Ubuntu - been there - done that - won't go back! Dave Rowell |
