Calling the get method with a string parameter wouldn't provide you with any error checking, whereas calling with a constant, python should check at runtime that the constant actually exists. I'm a lot more familiar with java than I am python (as people might guess from my patches) and if this were a java application then doing Config.get(Config.DATE_ABOUT_RANGE) would give you compile-time error checking.
