I think Raphael's suggestion may be possible with minimal impact and would indeed improve the user experience. 1) On import from an older version, Gramps can detect the version-bump from xml version, and produce a dialog as RA asks (say): Notice: Your data from an older version of Gramps will be imported into the format of the current version, but be aware that data exported from here may not be readable by the older version. 2) On import from a newer version, say something like: Warning: You are importing data exported from a newer version of Gramps, and there is a possibility that some data may not be recognized or handled the same as in the newer version.
