Thank you to everyone for your responses so far. I've tried to summarise on the wiki the wide range of approaches people are using. http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Places_in_GRAMPS Please feel free to have a look and include your approach if I've missed it. I would particularly like there to be a better indication of the pros and cons of the different approaches. My conclusion is that no way is "perfect" or even "right". Each has its good and bad points, and a better coverage of these on the wiki would help people work out what method would best suit them. If you'd rather not edit the wiki page, feel free to email me your comments and I'll try to incorporate them.
