I don't want to turn this list into a "what should I buy" forum, but I don't mind a little chatter in that area. http://www.semsons.com/datalogger.html shows a number of models for > under $100 but it's hard to determine pros and cons > > My primary considerations beyond general reliability would be; > > External power supply option > > Easy track log dump to pc and log reset > > Log file format compatible with GPSBabel I've had great luck with Semsons through the years for loggers. The best source I've found for info on this class of products is the gpspassion.comforum. I have a bucket full of logger products. Many of them have serious "what _were_ you thinking" issues. I don't have this model specifically, but the Wintec WBT-202 seems to address most of my wishlist items from the 201 which I held in pretty high regard. It powers from external mini-B. The logs are supported by GPSBabel and the product shows up like a disk drive on any OS. (In another forum, "driverless" was a big hook for you, IIRC.) The AMOD 3080GL takes AAA's and is also driverless; it just records files of NMEA sentences which is also very easy to work with. The MTK-based products seem to track very accurately and at a lot cost point. Support for these can be a bit spotty as several of the "makers" of these products seem to mess with the core MTK protocol. The ones listed in our doc have been reported to work. (I have the iBlue 747 and i821 in house.) While I like the idea of having a display, I give a protocol "thumbs down" to the Holux M241 for running a 12Mbit but at 3.8Kbits/sec; logs take forever to transfer from those. RJL |
