> How do people feel about upgrading the autotools used for building? In general, I don't have strong feelings either way, however I've tried to do this with some other software I work with and failed, having to drop back to autoconf 2.13. I didn't spend much time on this, so it could be that I just didn't look into it deeply enough. The problems I had were few but (for me) critical. The first problem I had was that the "sinclude" m4 builtin didn't seem to be recognized. That wasn't such a big deal, I could have coded around that, but the bigger problem was that the sed magic used to actually do the substitutions failed to work on one of the platforms I needed to support. (Compaq OpenVMS running in the GNV Unix emulation environment. This combination has a world-wide installed user base of about 3 people, I think...) Other than that, I tend to agree that the new versions are generally nicer, make it easier to write tests, and generally better all around. Eric |
