They are automatically _updated_, not generated.  They contain
the translations, which are entered automatically, but when the
source containing the translatable strings is updated the po files
are resynched (e.g. translations, addition of new strings).

I think this behaviour is a bit of a pain, but it is meant to keep
the translations up-to-date.  Perhaps it would be best to remove
the translations in the next development series, and resurrect
them before release (when the translations would be updated).
