Hi... having problems; I'm running osx 10.4.2 and after
downloading the gimp.app 2.2.8 file and attempting to
run it (tried to download fresh 2x) you click it, it
seems to run, Gimp appears on the upper menu bar... and
then it mysteriously closes itself. Help?

Exactly the same problem here. I have three Macs, and consequently a
threefold problem. I have not seen any official reply yet. Is there any
    somewhere?
    (G4, OSX 10.4.2)

This is probably because is can't find libXinerama.1.dylib
(which would be expected to be part of X11). I'm not sure
why some people seem to have it and others don't -- it seems
some are saying that you need to have Tiger - well I'm
running 10.4.3 and don't have it either. I seem to have
libXinerama.a (static lib), but no dynamic lib.

    Oh, I should have said I'm running 10.4.3 with X11 1.0

OK. So I had an old version of X11. You *need* X11 v1.1 --
check in the "About" to see what you have. I could have
sworn I'd updated it when I upgraded to Tiger, but I've just
gone through the Optional Packages install from the DVD and
now the dynamic Xinerama libs are there. Odd.

I (billsey@earthlink.net) have a kind of similar problem that just started happening recently:

Until recently (the last few weeks), I was happily using Gimp.app 2.2.10 on my photos and creations. Suddenly one day, Gimp would not complete launch at all (any 2.2.x version). It opens a small window to put up the splash but does not actually get to the point of putting up that splash, which leaves the unused window in front of and blocking the computer display until I kill the app. If I launch by clicking the dock or by double-clicking the Gimp.app icon, I get no clue as to what is wrong, but if I launch through the X11 terminal, I get an error message: "<datestamp> defaults [<number>] <linefeed> The domain/default pair of (.GlobalPreferences, AppleCollationOrder) does not exist" and even the terminal does not return to prompt until I kill Gimp.app through the dock. Other attempts at launching X11 apps work fine. It seems that only Gimp is effected in this way. I am running OSX 10.3.9 and have been right along—even before the problem cropped up.
