IPC-2581 seems to have gained traction and many CAD tools are starting to support it. Hello! There is a reason it is called *Gerber* Viewer. In the Unix sense every tool should do one thing, but do it good. Then, actually, gerbv is split up in a parse phase and a render phase. So yet another thing to parse shouldn't be too hard. I actually got approached many years ago by someone to implement ODB++. I hesitated (probably most from laziness), but afterwards - looking how it went for ODB++ - I am happy that I didn't implement it. Looking at the IPC-2581 on the 'net I get the same vibes as ODB++. It is actually ODB++ rehashed, though it seems that more people are onboard this time. A standard that screams out that it *free* every where and every time and then needs me to register to get it is not free. On the other hand, something that might actually be interesting to parse is GenCad, but that is another can of worms for another day.
