Arne,

I don't see an errors at the command  line when I run the curl command.  I also didn't see any errors in the httpd or geoserver logs (although I am running in the default logging mode).  Should I place Geoserver into enhanced logging?  Any place else to check?  Would I be better off going to JSON for the curl request?
