The log is not necessary for the script to work, but may be helpful to you in troubleshooting. I'd check the usual (error log, getcwd() output when the script runs, permissions on target file, php configuration, etc.) to try and identify the issue if you need the log file. If all you want to do is reload the configuration (ie, you don't need to change the request much from run to run), you could go back to exec'ing the curl command line tool: exec("curl -XPOST http://localhost:".$port."/geoserver/rest/reload"); http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/restconfig/rest-config-api.html#configuration-reloadingdocuments this request.
