Thank you very much for your replay. 

Here some important details regarding the GeoServer and the usage:
- GeoServer 2.0.0
- Source of the WMS is an Image Mosaic
- Request that fails:

As test I changed the source image mosaic to EPSG:4326. But it is still not
working.

I am using an OpenLayers project to visualize this data. You can see the

I don't have data in such projection, but just tried out the trunk nightly
build
with the "reproject geometry" WPS process, gave it POINT(60 60), EPSG:4248
as the source and EPSG:3857 as the target crs and the result was:
6679965.634452772 8399084.922899785

As far as I can tell just the reprojection works, maybe there is something
specific to either the version of GeoServer you're using (you did not say
which one was it) or to WMS usage.
In the latter case it would be good to have the data, the style and
a request that makes it fail for further debugging
