1.7.0 alpha is very old, many bugs have been fixed since then. We're
already at beta level now, but we haven't released an official beta
so far. If you want to try out a more recent 1.7.0 series please
download a nightly build from here:
http://gridlock.openplans.org/geoserver/trunk/

And see if the error is still there.
