In Max Payne 2 the characters have real-time soft shadows, even on GF3 hardware. Most of the papers / demos of soft shadows are for the new cards, I was surprised that it was possible on GF3 hardware. Any other current games with real-time soft shadows? >I've seen a technique described on the opengl.org forums that creates 3 >stenciled reigons out of each shadow volume (2 = full shadow, 1= blur >shadow, 0 = no shadow) then the light is applied to 1 & 0 and a smooth >shadow effect is given the the soft shadow area using a fragment program >(although i'm not sure how and what it uses to create this). Is that possible on GF3 hardware? The Max Payne 2 credits mention "The Global Illumination System is based on the Lumigraph Radiosity technology originally developed in cooperation with Hybrid Graphics by Timo Aila, Janne Hellsten, Petri Hakkinen, Jaakko Lehtinen and Jussi Rasanen". Unfortunately anything I could find was in finish and I don't have a finish to english translator. -Ryan De Boer |
