Peter Pike has his newest paper (bi-directional radiance transfer) up on his site. I haven't read that carefully yet, but it seems some way to combine per- vertex coefficients and texture-based stuff to get PRT at nearly pixel level, at nearly-realtime rates :) There's also "Matrix radiance transfer" by Kautz and Lehtinen (in Sig3D), that discusses alternative to SHs - directionally locally supported basis set (if I knew what that mean :)).
