The data cache is flushed on open(), but between open() and close()
the file is cached by the kernel.  Writes go through the cache, that
means that any write is immediately sent to the filesystem, but is
also stored in the cache.

In the CVS version the direct_io mount flag disables caching.

Currently not.  Controlling data caching more finely is something I've
been thinking about.  Ideas are welcome.

What about a Wiki?  I've not yet used one but it seems it's something
like what you want.  Anybody has experiences setting up a Wiki on SF?
