The reason I like passing the pid is that with the pid, I can acquire any information about the caller that I desire without regards for what others need or don't need to know about the caller. Without knowing the pid of the caller, there are so many pieces of information that would have to be passed through the kernel interface because there is no other way to obtain that information which is readily available to any other kernel module.
