Bob; I had a look at the VRML1 spec; and trying to see how FreeWRL could support it. (FreeWRLians - the freewrl/freex3d home page does say "With royalty free open standards, your models will continue to render, year after year." and I do get requests every once in a while, so VRML1 support/ translation might be a valid idea) Is it possible for you to tell me what VRML1 nodes are in use in your code?
