I don't know about Android or other mobile platforms, but BlackBerry will usually produce an event about device orientation and the framework/app adjusts the screen accordingly. For FreeGLUT, resize would be the only callback needed but getting what the orientation is might be useful anyway. I tend to just like to provide as much info as possible.
