As indicated by Steve - FreeGLUT uses whatever OpenGL implementation you've linked to. I recently ported POGL from GLUT to FreeGLUT, and it's definitely using the nvidia GPU (tested on Windows and Linux; in the process of testing MacOS). Any chance you are using the Mesa software binding? Also - keep in mind that vertex arrays still involve a CPU hit, particularly if you are updating it via CPU each frame.
