[Flex-help] new flexxer-getting started

I'm new to FLEX and have a mental block.
Manual (and other references) say user-specified Input file.
But manual shows calling sequence as flex options ... ...
How does flex recognize the Input file?
Why isn't call:  FLEX input.file options (or something similar?
