I checked again and can confirm that when I launch from the desktop icon the server is in fact running - it is available when I navigate to localhost:8080 as you suggest. A launcher icon does appear in whatever Ubuntu calls the thing that isn't the system tray ;-) . However, as I mentioned in my original mail, and error dialog box is displayed. When I click "OK" to close the dialog box, the launcher icon disappears and the server stops - it is no longer contactable at localhost:8080. The exact text of the error dialog box is: "An error occurred during startup. Please check the logs" The dialog box has two buttons: "View log" (which doesn't seem to do anything) and "OK". As I say, as soon as I click OK eXist shuts down. When I try running the launcher directly with the command java -Xmx1024 -jar start.jar org.exist.launcher.Launcher as Wolfgang suggests, I get the following error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Too small initial heap When I try running the bin/startup.sh script I get the following errors: bin/startup.sh: 41: bin/startup.sh: source: not found bin/startup.sh: 42: bin/startup.sh: source: not found bin/startup.sh: 43: bin/startup.sh: source: not found bin/startup.sh: 45: bin/startup.sh: get_opts: not found bin/startup.sh: 47: bin/startup.sh: check_exist_home: not found bin/startup.sh: 49: bin/startup.sh: set_exist_options: not found bin/startup.sh: 50: bin/startup.sh: set_jetty_home: not found bin/startup.sh: 52: bin/startup.sh: check_java_home: not found bin/startup.sh: 55: bin/startup.sh: set_java_options: not found bin/startup.sh: 58: bin/startup.sh: set_locale_lang: not found bin/startup.sh: 61: bin/startup.sh: check_jmx_status: not found bin/startup.sh: 63: bin/startup.sh: Bad substitution /Michael -----Original Message----- From: wol...@ex... Like Dannes says, I would also suspect a problem with the launcher rather than eXist itself. Could you tell us if you get any errors on the console if you run the launcher directly with java -Xmx1024 -jar start.jar org.exist.launcher.Launcher As a workaround you can always run eXist-db directly in the shell without launcher using the supplied startup.sh script in EXIST_HOME/bin.
