We have a running instance of eXist on that same version of Java, and have successfully allocated up to 8192 Mb (8 Gb) to it. The two major differences are that 1) Our kernel version is 3.2 instead of 2.6 and 2) our eXist version is 2.0. Neither of those *should* make a difference since the memory allocation is handled by Java directly. It is entirely possible however that the wrapper may be "capping" the values before passing them to java, although if that were the case I would be mystified as to the reason why. One thing worth trying as a test would be to use the startup.sh script instead of the wrapper script to kick off eXist. When you run ./bin/startup.sh under the eXist directory, the memory allocations settings are read in via the eXist-settings.sh file in the ./bin/functions.d directory. Look for this line in that script: *JAVA_OPTIONS="-Xms128m -Xmx512m -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8";* ...and change the options to the ones you want. Then run startup.sh and see if the memory allocations reflect the values you set them to.
