Ah, you can't use eXist's internal API on an external db. The way to
authenticate a user through the XMLDB API is to call
DatabaseManager.getCollection("/db", "user", "password"). If it
returns null, the user is not authenticated.

For security reasons, eXist does not store the password and thus can't
provide it! Only the user knows the clear text password ;-)
