Hi, if the XForms engine you're using is XForms 1.1 capable (Orbeon, for example), you could use the context attribute to determine the context for the insert action: http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/REC-xforms-20091020/#action-insert http://www.orbeon.com/orbeon/doc/reference-xforms-guide#insert-origin-attribute With XForms 1.0, insert is supposed to work only on "homogenous collections" (see [1]), so problems are likely to happen if the parent node of the insert target is empty (as in your case).
