What's the exception message? The code basically looks ok.

Wouldn't it be easier to handle the entire process in a single XQuery? 
Untested code:

for $qn in //QueueNode[(string-length(StartedDateTime/text()) = 0)]
let $start := $qn/StartedDateTime
return
     update value $start with current-dateTime()
