I managed to fix this problem: I edited the file XQueryServlet.java lines, 343 and 379, adding in the "/" character to close the <link> tag as below: out.print("<link rel=\"stylesheet\" type=\"text/css\" href= \"error.css\"></head>") out.print("<link rel=\"stylesheet\" type=\"text/css\" href= \"error.css\" /></head>") I then rebuilt exist and it works now. ...but java webstart doesn't work because the jars are unsigned :-( The same fix had to be done on my Mac OS X, and SUSE versions of eXist, so I assume other people will have been having this problem with the 1.1.1-newcore version.
