WOL packets (or tokens, to be more precise) can be carried inside any kind of packet, unidirected, or broadcast, as long as it gets to the NIC, past any filters it has. It doesn't have to be a UDP packet. It doesn't even have to be an IP packet. It only has to contain the pattern FF x 6 + MAC address x 16 somewhere in the body. That's the part that the silicon is looking for. |
