Conjectures wrong. The problem was that when making the floppy image for emulation you have to pad the image or the emulator will run into problems reading the tail blocks. Padding it out to the full size of a floppy to be safe made 5.3.10 .zdsk work. Even 5.3.12 .zdsk works, but the video was slightly messed up, which suggests that there is some writing into the video RAM area, which suggests a miscalculation in 5.3.12 as below.
