Hi, It is unfortunate that the ES40 project is kind of dead at the moment. The unfortunate problem of FreeAXP is that it only runs on Window just like Personal Alpha from Stromasys http://www.stromasys.ch/products/charon-axp/download-personalalpha/. Stromasys however also has CHARON-AXP/ES40 for Linux NCE (Non-Commercial, Experimental Use Only) http://www.stromasys.ch/products/charon-axp/download-charon-axp-nce/. This free version does have some limitations though. Stromasys is also working on a ES40 VMware client. Hi, I found the ES40 Emulator and ran a view tests with It, but without success. If my company could use the Emulator then I will try to get a Donation for the Project. Version 0.18+ (SVN checkout) Here are the Logs I could save. http://www.filehosting.at/file/details/138746/tests.tar (Uploaded on this free File-Hoster because I didn't know if it's allowed to send Attachments to the Mailing list.) PS: The System date is incorrect because I entered a random date. My Test system (Laptop): ================= - Linux Gentoo ~arch - Kernel: 2.6.34-rc2 #1 SMP - Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz GenuineIntel - GFX: Nvidia GForce TI 9800 GT Mobile - Desktop: ICEWM - GCC: gcc-Version 4.3.4 (Gentoo 4.3.4 p1.0, pie-10.1.5) - Ram: 4GB Its also possible to grant a Developer Access via SSH to my Testmachine for a short time if this help's to solve some issues. With best wishes Thomas |

Hi Fausto. The ACCVIO errors during the OpenVMS install have been there since day one. A quick-and-dirty solution is to install OpenVMS on a disk image using PersonalAlpha, and then start using ES40 with the pre-created disk image. Dave -----Original Message----- From: Fausto Saporito [mailto:fa...@un...] Sent: Saturday, April 18, 2009 3:35 AM To: ES40 Developer Discussions Subject: [ES40-developers] latest cvs (4 weeks ago) Hello all, I noticed Camiel updated cvs tree 4 weeks ago, so I created a 64bit version of es40 (under windows). This version is more stable than previous ones, I was able to install the bare openvms (without any other layered prods) without any problem. I noticed a strange behaviour in one thing: 1) if I access the disk during the installation (i.e. to add a license) the installation fails with an access violation error. 2) the pagefile extension (during the first AUTOGEN phase) takes a lot of time and the installation suggests to create it manually disabling the "high watermark" (SET VOLUME/NOHIGH SYS$SYSTEM). Doing that the extension is very quick. 3) Installing the TCPIP prod I have an access violation error when replacing a module in DCLTABLES file. I want to reinstall TCPIP using NOHIGH option, then test the DHCP. I'll keep you informed about these tests. Based on Volker's ethereal observations, I would guess that: 1) The NIC ring buffer processing is probably working OK, since it's working up 1784, and had to have processed at least two ring buffers correctly to get to that point. 2) It's likely, based on my SIMH VAX experience, that TCPIP is performing a split buffer calculation on the ES40 that is returning incorrect results, or isn't setting overflow/underflow flags correctly, so it's branching incorrectly and thus setting the ring buffers wrong. I couldn't get SIMH VAX network processing to work properly until a few VAX instructions had been corrected as part of another patch; I didn't have enough networking sources to debug it effectively. Fortunately, Volker has found a reproducible breaking point! A way to debug this might be to: A) Set a breakpoint in the NIC transmission code when executing the PING /PACKET_SIZE=1783 code, and see what is in the ring buffers. B) Repeat with /PACKET_SIZE=1784, logging the ES40 instructions executed during the (correct) transmission of the 1784 packet. C) Repeat with /PACKET_SIZE=1785, logging the ES40 instructions executed during the (incorrect) transmission of the 1785 packet. D) Compare the two instruction streams and see where they deviate. If they do, hand walk the operations just before and after the deviation and see if you can spot the errata. If they don't differ, walk all of the instructions :-( and see if they are setting values and overflow/underflow processing correctly. If you have the VMS sources for TCP/IP and/or the NIC drivers, you could reduce the search by finding the packet splitting code for the ring buffers and see what instructions need to be checked. Alternatively, either the ES40 IDB or your local IDE might support putting a watchpoint (when a data value is modified) on the ring buffer data, so you can walk the instruction stream during the packet split and fill. Hello developers, Would any of you care to dive into this? Solving this problem might make the ES40's networking functional at last. Kind regards, Camiel Vanderhoeven -----Original Message----- From: Volker Halle [mailto:Vol...@in...] To: Camiel Vanderhoeven Subject: ES40 and TCPIP PING/SIZE=1785 failing (works up to 1784) Camiel, I wondered, why FTPing binary files did not work and tried a couple of PING tests with the ES40 emulator. I seem to have stumbled over something: If you use $ TCPIP PING/SIZE=n host to ping from the ES40 emulator to some other node in the LAN by varying the ping packet size, everything works fine, until you exceed n=1784. Then you can't get any successful ping through ! If I look at an Ethereal packet trace for n=1784, I see one packet with 1514 bytes followed by another packet of 346 bytes on the wire. For n=1785, I see the first packet with only 866 bytes, followed by a packet of size 347, although the fragment offset for the 2nd packet correctly says 1480. Trying to debug this should be much easier than trying to debug a hanging FTP session... Dear groups, Over the past few weeks, I have received a number of questions regarding my commitment to and involvement with ES40 emulator development. This e-mail message is meant as a clarification of this, as well as of recent developments. As most of you will have noticed, I have spent little time on development on ES40 for almost a year. One of the reasons for this has been that the job that I've had for years with the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture became uncertain because of plans to move our office building, and my reluctance to relocate. At the same time, I was approached by Mr. Bruce Claremont of Migration Specialties, with the idea of starting development on a commercial multi-platform emulator. I have spent the better part of the last half of 2008 training people to take over my job, as well as that of two colleagues who left earlier in 2008. At the same time, I was making preparations to set up my own company, which I finally did in January 2009. Since then, I've been busy on the commercial emulators, as well as with the necessities involved with running a business. These developments have left me precious little time to devote to my family and hobbies, like the ES40 emulator. I apologize for being slow to respond to your e-mails. I don't expect to be able to devote a whole lot of time to the ES40 emulator this year. I would like to see the project succeed, however, so any improvements any of you can make are more than welcome. If someone would like to help out with checking patches into CVS and producing releases, please contact me directly. In the long run, I expect to see parts of the code developed for the commercial emulators find its way into the ES40 emulator. The reason that this will not happen anytime soon, is that the commercial emulator uses an entirely different basic framework, and code written for the commercial emulator isn't immediately compatible with ES40's framework. I hope this clarifies the recent slowness or lack of progress somewhat. Thank you for bearing with me. Hi, I am trying to run Debian Alpha under es40 but the boot hangs at the following point. I have tried both Debian 3 and 4 (old-stable and stable). I had tried with both IDE and SCSI disks. GUI is disabled. Do you have any suggestions for running Debian under es40 ? Timothy, I tried the whole thing myself and I ran into a few problems, but the following should work: Get Apple X11 and install it. Get Xcode 3.x and install it in the default location (/Developer), I'm not sure but check for a X11 development option en select it. Get the source code $ cvs -d:pserver:ano...@es...:/cvsroot/es40 login <cr> $ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:ano...@es...:/cvsroot/es40 checkout -P es40 Add /Developer/usr/bin to your path. Go to the es40 directory and do the following: $ cp config/config.* . $ chmod +x *.sh configure config.sub config.guess $ ./configure --disable-sdl --disable-sdltest --with-x CXX=llvm-g++-4.2 CC=llvm-gcc-4.2 CPP=llvm-cpp-4.2 $ make clean $ make I don't think poco is still a requirement. You may need to get libpcap although Leopard appears to have a version of this library already. I chose the llvm version of gcc 4.2 but you can also use the generic gcc 4.2 by removing the text 'llvm-' from the configure line. X11 needs to be running for the gui stuff to work. You can run es40 without a gui, configure a serial console and connect to it's port using Terminal. I hope this helps to get you started. In that case Timothy, welcome aboard. Regards, Martin Borgman, OpenOffice.org On OpenVMS Porting Group. P.S., what is the alpha system you currently own, because most Alpha systems do run OpenVMS, but some systems were never officially supported. I have several Alpha machines in my house: * AlphaServer 1000A 5/400 - this one is supported by OpenVMS. * Personal Workstation 600a - this one is not supported by OpenVMS, the IDE controller isn't supported, but with a SCSI controller like the KZPBA and SCSI CD player and some SCSI disks you're in business. You also may like some graphics. An old pci S3 card like the NumberNine should work. * Digital Alpha Multia - this one is not supported by OpenVMS but with some hacking and some drivers made by some hacking friends at Digital, it will run OpenVMS up to version 7.3. I never tried anything beyond that. Hello there, I downloaded es40_cvs_20080503_1030_src snapshot without using cvs which might explain the line terminator problem that I had. I'll try downloading with cvs itself and see what happens. I did modify some of the files to deal with the problem and got it to start building and then ran into an internal compiler error ( I think ? ). I'm also going to get the latest Apple compiler and see if it solves the second problem I had. I'm willing to take the leap, I know C and assembler and need a cool project to tinker with in order to get more into C++. I own a Alpha 21164SX system but it won't boot VMS according to the online docs. Hi Timothy, If all you want to is to study OpenVMS there are several other options. First of all there is simh. It basically works on any unix system and it works quite well. The downside is that you're stuck with OpenVMS VAX 7.3. Then there is Personal Alpha from SRI which is free, but requires Windows and the .Net framework. This should work just fine using bootcamp, or any VM. out there VirtualBox from SUN is a free option. As for our ES40 emulator it still requires a lot of work, but if you are willing to take the leap: - What sources did you use? - I've built various versions of es40 om my mac without using Xcode, the unix standard tools work just fine - I never encountered te problem you mention, but I use CVS tho get the sources. Kind Regards, Martin Borgman, OpenOffice.org On OpenVMS Porting Group. Timothy Patti wrote: > HI all.. HI all.. I'm trying to build ES-40 on a MacBook Pro without X-Code and the main problem that I'm having at the moment is that the files all have the DOS/WINDOWS 0d0a line terminators in them. This is causing some problems building in a command line environment on OSX or I imagine any other UNIX system. My motivation is to get OpenVMS running on my MacBook Pro so I can study VMS. Is everyone else building ES-40 on windows or on the Mac platform using an IDE of some sort ? Tim |

Hi David, and everyone else on the list. I'm still quite alive. Unfortunately for the ES40 project, I've been quite busily involved with a couple of other things lately. Things including my regular day-time job (quite unrelated to ES40 development), planning my brother's wedding, and spending some time travelling. Unfortunately, this meant that there has been very little real progress from my end on the emulator front recently. Hopefully my agenda will become less busy sometime next year, but for now I'm afraid I'll be busy for some time to come. Cheers, and thanks for your patience, Camiel. Yeah, the NewIde module vanished back in early summer along with the other major module additions/deletions. Caught us on the alternate Visual Studio projects too. :-) Personally, I've found that the ali module occasionally fails with what appears to be odd timing dependancies. It's worse on my slower machines. I've had a bit better stability hooking disk files and the CD to the scsi controller; it seems to have less eccentricities. (Look at the demo es40.cfg for example use) Dave ________________________________ From: es4...@li...
