Turns out that I needed fontconfig after all, and to actually put the font used by the textblock where fontconfig can find it. All working good now with the latest alpha tarballs. One of these days I'll put my OS + EFL build scripts in SVN. I'd have to cut the embedded app out first, and make it a bit more general purpose.
