I recall making something like that to put a hex socket in the end of that differential screw that serves as the front end anchor of the crossfeed drive when I put a ball screw in it. But that was relatively soft tool steel, never hardened even today, and is working well. I used a piece of an allen wrench, rigged to wobble so only one corner at a time was cutting. Probably from hints from you at the time. I tried it, it worked.
