From the beginning of GIRLS it was our attempt to cr= eate=20 an open source application for the wider community. I hope that we manage= d=20 this :-) But as the standard application is a simple one it will become necessary = to=20 create special versions (if any is interested at all) and it will be allr= ight=20 to put these special versions under another licence. These are my thoughts. Hi Uwe and Birgit, I just recompiled girls.exe and generated the .gdb file from db.sql from the latest CVS snapshot. girls.exe compiled OK. However, I had two errors in the db.sql file .. --8<-- CREATE PROCEDURE CURRENT_USER_THEMES ( RETURNS ( LABEL VARCHAR(80), THM_ID INTEGER) AS -->8-- and .. --8<-- ALTER PROCEDURE CURRENT_USER_THEMES ( RETURNS ( LABEL VARCHAR(80), THM_ID INTEGER) AS -->8-- Looks like there is missing close bracket after the procedure name ? Regards .. Geoff |

Hi, now that we are about to _really_ start with this project, I would like to use this list for all further discussions. First point to discuss: The licensing scheme for GIRLS. My suggestion: the base project (this is the one hosted on SourceForge) should be licensed under the GPL to keep it Open Source by law. Every customer who wants to create us or by himself a customized version, has the option to choose a commercial license, which allows him to keep his changes private but enforces the usage of a term like: 'Based on the original GIRLS project which can be found on ... ' and forbids to call the customized version also 'GIRLS'. What do you think? Regards Uwe |

Hi Birgit and Uwe, Welcome back .. I hope you had a great trip and that the weather was kind to you. Did you get to take the walks you had planned ? Did you have a chocolate fondo ? (I think this is what Zermantt is famous for ??). I went to Canberra last weekend as I said I would. I was unable to do the walk I mentioned because we had a cold front blow through southern Australia and there was very heavy snow falls up on the mountains. Hopefully, this colder weather will continue for winter and the ski season. We will be there again in four weeks time. I have been busy with the big firebird database I have been developing at work .. it is almost ready to go into production. I have spent a lot of time writing an input interface program for table creation, data entry and queries. It is now very flexible and most of what I need to do can be done by editing a small configuration file. I think it could be made a bit more generic so that it could handle other situations. Once I have the database up and running I will take a look at this. I think it would actually make a nice tool for the elj project. Do you mind if at some stage I put this tool in the CVS at elj-girls in the tools directory? I tried to compile the girls tool but got the following message. --8<-- ****** Fatal Error: Unable to load class "PRS_DOC_DESCRIPTOR". Line 101 column 27 in GIRLS_DOCUMENTS (c:\sourceforge\elj-girls\prj\src\frm\girl s_documents.e) : tree: GIRLS_TREE_CONTROL[PRS_DOC_DESCRIPTOR] ^ ------ File "main.bat" not found. Error(s) during `compile_to_c'. BUILD FAILED! C:\sourceforge\elj-girls\prj> --8>-- Anyway, it is great to have you back and I am planning to get elj-win32 released in the early part of this week. Andrew and I have spend some time on the VMS version of SmallEiffel. We are going to submit a patch that allows lib files to be added to the command line. SmallEiffel is an amazing piece of software. We are still stunned by the fact that it runs so well on VMS and all the other platforms. Regards .. Geoff |

Hi Uwe and Birgit, I just rebuilt my SE (-0.74) using the latest lcc-win32 (11 May 2002) and got the following error on recompiling the elj-girls application (prj) --8<-- C:\sourceforge\elj-girls\prj>geant compile ****** Warning: Bad usage of GENERAL.to_pointer. NNnnnghghh, shame on me, sorry! > C:\sourceforge\elj-girls\db\qs_back.gdb is not a valid database. It is the backup of the database, generated by gbak. You got to restore the database first. > I am using SYSDBA / masterkey (Username/Password) pair? The users and admins of a firebird installation are kept in the isc4.gdb and this means, users are not maintained on per DB basis but on per installation basis. So if you still have the default SYSDBA / masterkey on your system, your user / password pair is fine. Just leave the Host field empty for local connections. BTW: regarding the mouse events: 1) call the feature which call the 'connects' in turn ;-) 2) use -1, -1 for the IDs 3) enjoy! HIH Uwe |

Hi Geoff, does a zipped backup version of our developer database help for now? I can send you one, it is not to big. Regards Uwe P.S. Will have a deeper look into the event trouble today. |

Hi Uwe, Just wondering about the script to set the elj-girls database. It would be nice to get past the login form to see how the forms interact with each other. I have been using the elj-girls code to help build the ewxwPad application. It has been very useful. No problems if you are too busy to produce the database script, I have plenty of other things to do.. Regards .. Geoff |

Hi Uwe, After some minor problems relating to elj-commits and elj-girl-commits, all I now have to do is modify the permission of the syncmail script to to be executable .. using chmod +x, unfortunately, wincvs does not pass the executable permission through to the CVSROOT files. I have checked out of the elj-girls CVS and have confirmed the permission to be non-executable in one of the sf accounts I have set this using chmod +x syncmail and tried to update the CVS from the sf account. Unfortunately, I don't have ssh set up properly and get the following error .. --8<-- elj@usw-pr-shell2:/home/groups/e/el/elj/cvs/CVSROOT$ cvs -z3 -d:ext:el...@cv...:/cvsroot/elj-girls/CVSROOT co syncmail The authenticity of host 'cvs.elj-girls.sourceforge.net (10.5.1.7)' can't be established. DSA key fingerprint is 02:ab:7c:aa:49:ed:0b:a8:50:13:10:c2:3e:92:0f:42. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? -->8-- Is there anyway of you changing the permission via your Linux setup. I guess there will be permission problems? Thanks .. Geoff |

Another short one, sorry, I am hungry ;-) We will commit the database script as soon as possible, but it will take one or two days. We will add some instructions to generate the needed DB. Regards Uwe |

Hi Uwe, Just writing to say that I have not yet figured out how to get the elj-girls-commits list up and running. I have the details here .. http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=772&group_id=1 Actually, I think I have some thoughts on what to do now, so I will try in the morning. Regards .. Hi Uwe, When I last tried created girls.exe and ran the login, I was not able to get a database working. I filled in the following screen using the admin username and password: C:\sourceforge\elj-girls\doc\girls_login.html Do you have suggested names file each of the fields .. Server - .. Database Path - .. User - enter your login name Password - enter the password assigned to the login you are using Role - select the SQL role you want to use At present at home I cannot get running version of girls because of elj-girls environment variable problems with win98. Will try again in the morning with win2000. Regards .. Geoff |

First message to the new list, I think :-) I am trying to get myself up and running with the new elj-2002 using the gobo build and ace tools. Having some fun and games on win98 .. http://www.geocrawler.com/lists/3/SourceForge/15430/0/8325973/ http://www.geocrawler.com/lists/3/SourceForge/15430/0/8326395/ Anyway, another quirk of win98 has arisen with the environment variable for ELJ-GIRLS. Unfortunately, win98 has problems with the hyphen in the env variable name and as a result I cannot build the project. I have had tried wrapping it with quotes but it doesn't appear to work. Would it be possible, at this early stage of the project, to change this to ELJ_GIRLS, which should work. I will understand if you think it is too late to make this change now or do not wish to support this platform, I will work around it some way. Regards .. Geoff -- ge...@el... -- http://elj.sf.net/ |
