I think the problem is the missing EFI-1.x console support in Linux. I'm not sure, if the EFI GOP support should work (in theory). I'm trying it via rEFIt... Some time ago I asked about the differences between the EFI graphics alternatives on this list. Maybe a look into the archive will give you some answers... I'm really interested in any progress.
