I had this very same problem last week. The problem was I had left a space at the end of the line defining the install directory in host.conf (the file the instructions say we should customise). After I removed this space, I was able to compile, but there remained unresolved symbols in libGL(va_start and va_end), so I wasn't able to compile gears.c. When I wasn't able to resolve this problem, I reinstalled X from RPMs and tried the driver tarball from the download section of the DRI home page. This worked for me. I see today, there is a new tarball.
